Safety Engineer

Location: Greenville, SC, US
Job Description:
Manage the EHS function to ensure compliance with applicable safety, health and environmental laws, corporate directives and certifications. Promote awareness and provide training as appropriate to keep employees, visitors and contractors fully engaged regarding EHS requirements and goals at the Greenville location.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively participate as a valued member of the site management team to provide EHS leadership, guidance, and technical support.
  • Establish an effective EHS Management System to track, assign, and verify EHS responsibilities that maintain compliance with applicable regulatory and corporate requirements and integrates them into the overall business operation.
  • Establish strategic plans and annual EHS goals and objectives to improve overall EHS programs and performance.
  • Develop and deploy EHS procedures and training programs to reduce injuries, reduce risk, and maintain compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage subordinates in a fast paced dynamic environment.
  • Manage the ISO 14001 program and conduct periodic internal and supplier audits.
  • Lead and participate in site safety/environmental initiatives including those associated with employee wellness, interaction with the local community and visitors/contractors.
  • Remain up to date regarding changes in the regulatory and standards landscape such as ISO, NFPA, FM, ANSI etc.
  • Manage site EHS projects and programs including but not limited to; respiratory protection, ionizing radiation, ergonomics, hearing conservation, industrial hygiene, first aid/CPR, RCRA, SARA 302,312 & 313, TSCA, haz com, air permitting, waste water, FM Global requirements, spill response, emergency programs, waste minimization, storm water compliance, laser safety, confined space, LOTO, elevated work/fall protection, contractor safety and forklifts/powered industrial trucks, lead, cyanide, BBP, and safe chemical handling.
  • Provide thorough reporting and timely follow-up to site incidents and insure appropriate action item completion.
  • Assist Facility Manager in development and implementation of a behavioral based approach to safety.
  • Implement, amend and follow procedures regarding chemical and hazardous waste handling.
  • Prepare and conduct safety and environmental training programs, maintain records and documentation as required
  • Use administrative, engineering and control methodologies to reduce medical claim rate, claim costs and property loss exposures.
  • Lead continuous improvement opportunities utilizing best management practice, benchmarking, predictive analytic s and the like.
  • Conduct hazard and safety assessments/audits and prepare reports and summaries as needed.
  • Communicates and reports on plant environmental, safety and health issues at all levels both internally and externally.
  • Interact with AVX Management, legal, and regulatory agencies and representatives.
  • Other related duties as required.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in environmental safety and health, chemistry, engineering, or the physical sciences.
  • Six or more years of managerial EHS experience in manufacturing facilities with progressively increasing responsibility.
  • Professional environmental or safety certification from a nationally recognized organization preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of time and occasionally flex the work schedule as necessary to oversee project work or engage various work shifts, or to respond to emergency events.
  • Demonstrated bias for action to establish effective workplace relationships in order to effectively lead, motivate and influence employees and others regarding EHS objectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Technical writing including development of technical documents, procedures, sampling plans, hazard/job analyses, and training presentations.
  • Intermediate level of knowledge using standard Microsoft desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook).
  • Prior experience managing an ISO 14001 Certification.
